RESEARCH ASSISTANTSHIPS


The Department of Computer Science of the
University of Maryland , College Park and the Fraunhofer Center for Experimental Software Engineering have created the Fraunhofer Research Assistantships. The purpose of these special Fraunhofer assistantships is to permit individuals with some professional experience to obtain an advanced degree in Computer Science at the University.

The recipients of the Fraunhofer assistantships will work on software engineering research projects at the Fraunhofer Center, Maryland. University of Maryland faculty associated with the Center will direct them. The Fraunhofer Center works with its industrial client companies in improving their software development practices, and these special assistantships allow students to do applied research in practical industrial situations.

Each fall, the Department of Computer Science may award up to two such assistantships. These awards may be renewed annually by mutual consent. In all other respects, the Fraunhofer assistants will have the same rights and obligations as any other Computer Science graduate student at the University of Maryland .

 Requirements:

1.      Before being considered for an assistantship, applicants must fulfill all requirements for admission to the graduate program in Computer Science at the University of Maryland , College Park . See http://www.cs.umd.edu/Grad/catalog.shtml

2.      Applicants must be interested in a research topic related to software engineering.

3.      Applicants must have at least 2 years of full-time professional experience with a software development organization prior to being awarded this assistantship.

4.      The Fraunhofer GRA is available to those wanting to pursue a Ph.D. degree, but those wanting a M. S. degree will also be considered.

 Awards:

1.      Each Fraunhofer assistantship carries a 12-month stipend of $30,000 in addition to tuition and other benefits.

2.      Each Fraunhofer assistant is expected to work 20 hours per week on their Fraunhofer Center activities.
