Dr. Victor Basili's Legacy to be Honored at ICSE 2005

On May 16, 2005, Dr. Victor Basili’s contributions to the field of software engineering will be honored at the 27th International Conference on Software Engineering. Dr. Basili’s work guided this field, beginning with his contributions during a crucial period during its emergence in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Dr. Basili quickly perceived and responded to a need to understand software and its developing processes, techniques, methods, and tools. His early efforts helped shape software engineering into an empirical science that relies upon a discipline of observation, theory formation, experimentation and feedback. Throughout his career, Dr. Basili continually applied the scientific method to the software engineering domain, developing concepts such as the Goal-Question-Metric method, the Quality-Improvement paradigm, and the Experience Factory approach. Each of these achievements has brought a sense of order to the ad-hoc development so prevalent in the software engineering field.

On the occasion of Dr. Basili’s 65th birthday, a six-session symposium will summarize and reflect upon his collected work. Dr. Basili’s efforts have led to the incremental establishment of the discipline of software engineering. In particular, his contributions in the following areas of software engineering research will be considered:
• Formal languages and formal methods
• Measurement
• Software Engineering Laboratory
• Learning Organizations and Experience Factory
• Technical developments and empirical studies
• Experience bases

Each session will be chaired by a leading expert who has worked with Dr. Basili in the past. For further information, please see the ICSE 2005 website from which we borrowed liberally for this article. Click here for article.

Dr. Victor Basili Awarded Honorary Ph.D. in Natural Sciences

On January 28th, 2005, Dr. Victor Basili was awarded an honorary doctorate in Natural Sciences by the Computer Science Department of the Technical University of Kaiserslautern. This significant award was the first honorary degree awarded in the German University’s thirty-year history. Following the guidelines of the Computer Science Department, honorary doctoral degrees are only awarded to those who have made outstanding contributions in the field of computer science. Dr. Basili received this distinguished award in recognition of his key role in founding the field of Empirical Software Engineering and in acknowledgment of his life-long contributions in this area.

The day’s ceremonies included lectures by Dr. Laszlo Belady (CEO, Eutecus, Inc., Austin, TX) and Dr. Lionel Briand (Carleton Univesity, Ottawa, Canada) honoring Dr. Basili’s work in the field of Empirical Software Engineering. Dr. Dieter Rombach, head of the Software Engineering Research Group at the Technical University of Kaiserslautern and Fraunhofer IESE, presented the laudatio, after which Dr. Basili delivered the event’s keynote address, “Perspectives on Software Engineering.”

Dr. Basili awarded "Laurea Honoris Causa"

The University of Sannio, Benevento (BN), Italy, will be assigning "Laurea Honoris Causa" in Informatic Engineering to Victor Robert Basili for his continual, outstanding contributions to Software Engineering.

Aniello Cimitile, Software Engineering Chair and Rector of the University of Sannio, proposed the honorary assignment, the Engineering Faculties of the same University accepted that proposal, which was eventually approved by the Ministry for Education, University and Research of the Italian Government.

The celebration is planned for 5 - 6 April 2004, in Benevento, Italy, starting from around 10:00 AM.  Gerardo Canfora, head of the Center for Excellence in Software Engineering, and full professor of Computer Science at the University of Sannio, will be giving "Laudatio"; this is a kind of lecture about Vic's Vitae, presents motivation for the honorary assignment, and precedes a talk (given by Vic). The Faculties of Engineering will be formally assigning the honorary laurea.

FC-MD Scientists featured in May/June 2002 IEEE Software Magazine

Dr. Ioana Rus and Dr. Mikael Lindvall, scientists at Fraunhofer Center Maryland, served as guest editors for the May/June 2002 special issue on Knowledge Management in Software Engineering of the prestigious IEEE Software magazine (http://www.computer.org/software). IEEE Software is the leading authority on transferring software theory and applying it into practice and on bridging the gap between research and practice in software engineering. Drs. Rus and Lindvall selected the published articles among an amazingly large and strong set of articles submitted for this special issue. Among the authors of these articles are other scientists and researchers related to FC-MD: Dr. Victor Basili and Dr. Carolyn Seaman who contributed with an article on the “Experience Factory” and Dr. Seija Komi-Sirvio who authored an article on “need based” knowledge acquisition and delivery.

Drs. Rus and Lindvall also published in this special issue an insightful tutorial on Knowledge Management in Software Engineering. The tutorial fits extremely well into this context as it serves as the introduction and lead to seven articles on the state-of-the-practice on knowledge management in software engineering as performed in well-known organizations. The tutorial starts with the observation that software organizations’ main assets are not plants, buildings, or expensive machines. The main asset of a software organization consists of its intellectual capital. The major problems with intellectual capital are that not only does expertise have legs and walks home everyday, but also inexperience walks in the door. Whether they admit it or not, many software organizations face the challenge of sustaining the needed level of competence in order to win contracts and fulfill undertakings. Knowledge management (KM) is an emerging discipline that promises to capitalize on organizations’ intellectual capital. KM has drawn widespread attention and has promising features. The tutorial discusses business problems and knowledge needs common to many software organizations. It introduces key concepts of KM and applies them to software engineering. It discusses how existing software engineering processes and tools can be leveraged and integrated into a KM strategy. The tutorial also brings up issues of implementing KM including cultural aspects of sharing knowledge.

The state of the practice section of the magazine reports on the needs, implementations, issues, results, success factors, and lessons learned from a variety of KM applications. For example, Dr. Jay Liebowitz, Knowledge Management Officer, describes the current KM activities at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center.
